FURNITURE MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Picking any furniture from hundreds of options available is already a tedious task. But somehow you managed and bought a piece of furniture that looked perfect online only to realize it doesn't fit in your space.

This is why measuring the furniture, the space, and the doorways, including all the way where it will travel to reach its space, is important. Measuring also cuts down the hassle of returns or tight squeezes of the furniture to bring into a place.

So, measuring the furniture might seem like an ignorant step, but trust us, this quick step makes all the difference in making your home feel just right.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR SPACE TO ENSURE YOUR FURNITURE CAN GET INSIDE YOUR HOME?

Doorways

  • Measure all interiors and exterior doorways before moving furniture.
  • Open the door widely and measure the height, width, diagonal length and maximum swing of the door.
  • Consider the knob placement too.

Measure your space

To measure your room where you want to place the furniture:

  • Measure the length and width of the room to see
  • If the furniture is tall, measure the wall’s height

Note: If you are adding new furniture to a room that already has different furniture pieces, measure the existing furniture to avoid overcrowding the space.

Consider any architectural features, like fireplaces, and check the window height if you place furniture in front of a window.

Stairs

If your house is located on the second floor, the stairs first lead to a wall instead of an open room. So measure the flat areas or the space present at the top or bottom of each stair to ensure you get adequate space to place the furniture while carrying it up.

Measure the distance from the stairs to the wall.

Next, measure the ceiling height in three different locations, such as

  • From the bottom step to the ceiling
  • From the landings(flat areas between the stairs) to the ceiling
  • From the top step to the ceiling

Elevators

To measure the elevator to ensure if it would fit the space.

  • First, measure the height and depth of the elevator door and the interior height, width, and depth.
  • Next, diagonally from the bottom center of the door opening to the back ceiling.
  • Calculate the handrails and lights within the elevator as they aren't removable.

Hallway

When measuring the hallway:

Consider the internal doorway along with the height, width, and depth of the hallways.

Look for potential obstructions in the hallway, such as existing furniture on the way and the light fixture (low hanging ones).

HOW TO MEASURE FURNITURE DIMENSIONS?

Now let’s discuss how to measure furniture dimensions to ensure if it fits like a glove in your space.

Sofa

In sofas and sectionals, the depth is the same as the length.

To measure the sofa, take measurements of the width and diagonal depth

Width: Measure from arm to arm (left to right).

Depth: Measure from the back to the front of the sofa (same as length).

Diagonal Depth: Measure at an angle from the top of one arm to the bottom of the opposite side.

Sectional sofa

Sectional sofas come in segments.

To measure the sectional sofa, you must

  • Measure the sectional sofa's overall width and length.
  • Next, measure the height from the base to the top of the back.
  • Next, measure the width from right arm to left arm across the assembled sectional.
  • Finally, measure the depth from the front edge to the back side of the sectional.

Sleeper sofa

Measuring the sofa is identical to the steps you take to measure a normal sofa.

To measure the sleeper sofa's bed,

  • Measure the sofa’s width when it's just a sofa
  • Next, measure extended depth when it's converted into a bed.
  • If you plan to push the sleeper sofa against the wall, measure the height also.

While measuring these, look for any obstructions, such as windows, shelves, etc.

Dining furniture

Measure the dining space

First measure the length and the width of the dining room area. With these measurements in hand, now do the math.

Minus 6 feet from the length and the width to give you a 3" clearance on all sides of your table.

With this, you get the dining table's recommended size.

Measure the dining table

To be sure that the dining table fits your space, measure the table's length and make sure it will fit in your dining area. You must have room to walk around too.

Next, calculate the height of the dining table.

Measure the dining chair

To measure the chair seat height,

  • Take measurements from the floor to the top of the seat.
  • For enough legroom, leave 10-12 inches between a chair seat (18-20 inches high) and the table bottom.
  • Measure the chair width at its widest point, from the arms or the back.

Ensure there's enough space between chairs to avoid bumping elbows

  • How much space to leave around the table?
  • Leave at least 36 inches of space from the table edge to the walls or other furniture for comfortable movement.

If people will be walking behind the dining chairs, aim for 48 inches of space.

    Note:

If your dining table comes with a leaf extension. So, be sure to measure it both in its compact and extended position if you already have a space crunch.

    Recliners

To measure the recliner follow the below-given steps:

    • Measure the recliner's width from armrest to armrest.
    • Next, measure the recliner when fully reclined, including the length from headrest to footrest.
    • Lastly, measure the area where the recliner will go and ensure 5-10 inches of space between the wall and the recliner at full extension.

    Bar stool

First, measure the height and width of your bar or countertop to calculate how many stools can fit and how tall they should be.

As for the bar stool measurement,

Measure the furniture from the floor to the top of the stool’s seat.

    To measure legroom,

    • First, decide how much space you want between your lap and the countertop. 10 inches is ideal here.
    • The stool seat must be at least 10 inches below the countertop's underside.
    • To find the perfect stool height, subtract 10 inches (legroom) from your countertop height.

    Delivery boxes

Besides calculating the furniture, consider the delivery box size to ensure if it goes through the stairs, doorways, pathways, and finally to its entitled space.
